Connection to local heating network: Zumtobel Group makes active contribution to CO2 reduction
11.04.2019
  • Sustainable energy use at the location in Dornbirn through local heating
  • CO2 savings of 1,707 tonnes per year
  • Waste wood pallets are introduced into the energy cycle

Dornbirn, Österreich – The Zumtobel Group has covered the majority of its heating requirements at its location in Schweizerstrasse in Dornbirn by local heating generated from biomass since the beginning of this year, making a positive contribution to regional CO2 reduction.

“The connection to the region’s local heating network is another commitment we make to climate-neutral energy use and at the same time an active contribution to regional sustainability and value creation. We cover 100% of the room heating requirements for our location in Schweizerstrasse this way. Depending on the regional climate, this corresponds to energy requirements of up to 7 GWh per year,” says Mario Wintschnig, CSR Officer of the Zumtobel Group.

CO2 savings of 1,707 tonnes per year
Based on the heating required by an average single family house in Vorarlberg of 15,000 kWh/year, the above-mentioned 7 GWh/year of the Zumtobel Group are equivalent to the annual heating requirements of 467 single family houses. This results in climate- and consumption-related CO2 savings of 1,707 tonnes per year. The calculation of the CO2 savings is based on CO2 emissions of 2.75 kg/m3 as published by the Austrian Environment Agency and an energy density of 11.28 kWh/m3 according to Vorarlberger Kraftwerke.

Waste wood pallets introduced into the energy cycle
The Zumtobel plant in Dornbirn supplies the operator of the local heating network with 200 tonnes of wood from disposable and defective pallets per year. This is equivalent to energy of approx. 800 MWh per year and roughly corresponds to 80,000 m³ of natural gas or 80,000 litres fuel oil. The energy sources of biogenic local heating consist of a mix of regional forest wood chips (50 per cent), sawmill by-products (30 per cent) and waste wood (20 per cent), which includes the wood from the Zumtobel Group’s pallets. To maintain failure protection within the Zumtobel plant, a natural gas boiler is currently still in use.

Zumtobel Group – ÖKOPROFIT® business
In May 2018, the Zumtobel Group was awarded the ÖKOPROFIT® environmental certification for its environmentally-friendly manufacturing procedures at the Dornbirn site for the twenty-fourth time running. This underlines the company’s ongoing commitment to making an active contribution to regional sustainability. With the connection to the region’s local heating network, the Zumtobel Group is setting an example yet again and reaffirming its dedication to a positive regional development
