Zumtobel plant in Usingen receives EU recognition for energy efficiency
07.11.2013
Dornbirn / Austria, Usingen / Germany – At the end of October, Zumtobel‘s Usingen plant qualified as a partner in the European Union’s GreenBuilding Programme. The EU initiative recognises measures that increase energy and cost efficiency in existing or new buildings. Last year, Zumtobel invested 500,000 EUR in the introduction of an energy concept at Usingen and significantly improved the site’s energy footprint. Data collected over the past 12 months shows that annual energy savings of around 25 per cent and a 450-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions have been achieved.

The fact that we have been awarded partner status in the EU’s GreenBuilding Programme confirms that we have adopted the right measures. The investments made represent a contribution towards sustainable production operations and we are delighted to see that our efforts have now been recognised by the EU,” says Managing Director Ralph Maier.

Energy concept with efficient combined heating and power plant
As part of the energy concept that was jointly developed with Siemens AG, a combined heating and power (CHP) plant was installed which produces heat and electricity in a single process. It utilises natural gas with an overall efficiency rate of 91 per cent. Further measures include the changeover from oil to natural gas, requirements-based control of the heat supply, conversion of the heating system in the halls of the facility and replacement of the measuring, regulating and control technology. A green building monitor displays the amount of energy being consumed and generated on a continuous basis.

About the GreenBuilding Programme
The European Commission launched the GreenBuilding Programme (GBP) in 2005. The programme is aimed at improving the energy efficiency of non-residential buildings in Europe on a voluntary basis. It addresses owners of non-residential buildings and encourages them to realise measures which enhance the energy and cost efficiency of their buildings.
