CO2 emissions
The CO2 emissions determined for the Components and Lighting Segments are made up of “direct emissions” produced by consuming fuel oil and gas, and “indirect emissions” produced by consuming district heating and electricity. The CO2 emissions produced by transporting products will be recorded for the first time for the 2011/12 financial year and will be published in future Sustainability Reports. This will add “Other indirect emissions” due to transportation of goods to the previously determined CO2 emissions and will bring us more in line with the requirements for working out a carbon footprint in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Measures in the Zumtobel Group to cut CO2 emissions are based primarily on optimising material and energy requirements in the manufacturing process and optimising transport logistics.
The Zumtobel Group’s environmentally relevant emissions include carbon dioxide (CO2), dust and noise. In the case of dust and noise emissions, the Zumtobel Group not only adheres to all EU Directives and plant-specific thresholds; in the period under review, appropriate measures actually made it possible to reduce emissions still further. For instance, workshop doors and roofs in Dornbirn and Les Andelys were recently replaced; this reduced noise emissions as well as saving energy. Dust emissions in the Dornbirn luminaire plant were significantly reduced by switching to modern powder coating equipment.
Emissions of volatile organic compounds due to the use of solvents and ozone-depleting substances from the operation of refrigeration equipment are virtually negligible owing to the low volumes involved and are not recorded.
