Dornbirn, Austria – In early March 2018, Vorarlberger Kraftwerke AG (VKW) and Zumtobel Group Services (ZGS), a Zumtobel Group brand, signed an open-ended agreement for the joint provision of light contracting services. Now, firms in Austria’s Vorarlberg region and in Germany have an attractive alternative to purchasing lighting systems at considerable cost: they can conclude an agreement for the provision of a comprehensive service that includes everything from planning a modern lighting solution to replacement of the existing system and regular maintenance. Zumtobel Group Services is responsible for developing, implementing, installing and regularly servicing the lighting system. And thanks to the participation of energy utility VKW, a fixed monthly rate is charged for the entire service package. This yields major benefits for customers, as the savings from reduced power consumption and maintenance exceed the monthly light contracting charge.
VKW, the largest energy utility in Vorarlberg, attaches great importance to saving energy, not least through efficient lighting solutions: “We see strong demand for light contracting among our customers. The approach of ‘leasing light’ is in tune with current trends. Our new offering makes it easy for customers to save energy. And Zumtobel Group Services is the ideal partner for providing these complete packages,”
explains Helmut Burtscher, Head of Building Technology and Energy Services at VKW.
Herwig Burtscher, Vice President Turnkey and Finance Services at Zumtobel Group Services,
adds: “We’re very pleased to launch this collaboration with VKW. We have full confidence in one another and are working together smoothly to support our customers. Our full-service offering allows firms to replace their existing lighting systems and save on operating expenses without having to make costly investments of their own. It’s about lighting that pays for itself.”
Ten tonnes less CO2
For decades, VKW has enjoyed an excellent reputation for advising its customers on ways to increase their energy efficiency. So the utility is familiar with the challenges companies face in improving their energy balance sheets: the investments required to modernise lighting systems are often considerable. By offering companies the opportunity to contract lighting services, VKW and ZGS enable them to implement an efficient LED-based solution without the need to make any investments of their own, so they can immediately start reducing their electricity bills. On average, each implemented project eliminates ten tonnes of CO2 emissions and saves about 100,000 kWh of electricity a year.
The partnership is also helping to strengthen the region’s economy. By way of example, ZGS mainly installs luminaires that are produced in the Zumtobel Group’s factory in Dornbirn.
Light contracting: a win-win deal for customers
ZGS and VKW have already implemented seven joint projects with a total volume of €830,000, five of them in Vorarlberg. Work has also started on further projects in Austria and Germany.
40 percent less energy for twice the luminous intensity
One of the first firms to avail itself of the new light contracting offering was Aluminium GmbH Nachrodt (AGN) based near Dortmund, Germany, a branch of the Speedline aluminium plant in Schlins, Austria. AGN commissioned VKW and Zumtobel Group Services to install energy-efficient lighting. State-of-the-art Zumtobel industrial luminaires were installed in eight production halls, one of which houses the AGN foundry. They included nearly 300 TECTON continuous-row luminaires, CRAFT LED high-bay luminaires and robust SCUBA LED moisture-proof fittings. The six-year service agreement guarantees reliable luminous intensity of between 200 and 400 lux, depending on requirements in different parts of the plant. The new installations consume 40 percent less energy than the old systems while emitting twice as much light. ‘The new lighting is an enormous improvement for our staff. The better illumination greatly facilitates their work, and at the same time we benefit from significant energy savings. For us, light contracting pays off every day, and we know that our lighting is in good hands’
, says Frank Hildebrandt, Plant Manager at AGN.
A leading-edge lighting solution for the sport and recreation centre in Hard
Another project the two firms have worked on together is the sport centre of the community of Hard on Lake Constance. Spanning 2,700 square metres, the facility is mainly used by the local handball team for training and championship matches. Zumtobel Group Services installed new LED-based CRAFT hall luminaires from Zumtobel above the court and the seating areas. The new luminaires have a connected load of 42 kW, 30 kW less than before. This adds up to an annual reduction in energy consumption of 89,000 kWh while eliminating nine tonnes of CO2 emissions. A light contracting agreement was concluded for ten years, covering all the relevant services from project management to dismantling of the old system and installation of the new luminaires. The new, more efficient LED fittings have dramatically cut energy and maintenance costs, saving the community some €140 a month overall. Erich Lindner, Managing Director of Harder Sport- und Freizeitanlagen Betriebsgesellschaft mbH, sums up the results as follows: “The service agreement gives us security and flexibility for the hall lighting going forward. As a result of the modernisation project we now have such good light that even HD television broadcasts are possible. And the included maintenance service means that our lighting will keep up with the latest advances, without us having to do anything ourselves – it’s an ideal combination!”
Benefiting from light as a service
Other customers, including Tischler Rohstoff e.Gen. in Hohenems, witzemann+fritz GmbH in Lustenau, both in Austria, and Profilmetall in Hirrlingen, Germany, have also already taken advantage of ‘light as a service’ and are delighted with the results. In the case of Profilmetall, for example, the switch from conventional to LED lighting with conclusion of a service agreement has lowered its energy costs by 64 percent, more than enough to cover the monthly charge. The company currently saves €239 per month, and enjoys substantially better lighting.
